This research, conducted by a team of researchers from Diponegoro University, explored coral reef rehabilitation methods using artificial structures made from concrete waste. Construction waste concrete was used as the base material due to its high durability and easy availability.
The concrete structure was cast in the form of a hollow cube and placed in the coastal waters of Karimunjawa. Within six months, new algae, sponges, and coral colonies began to grow on the structure's surface.
The goal of this research is to create a new habitat that encourages the natural recovery of marine ecosystems. The use of waste concrete also contributes to reducing construction waste and supports the principles of a circular economy.
Divers and coastal residents were involved in the placement and monitoring of the structures. The research also produced technical guidelines and educational videos to encourage similar initiatives in other coastal areas.
The next step is to assess its long-term effectiveness and impact on fish populations and marine biodiversity as a whole.
