This research was conducted by a team from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), which developed seawater desalination technology using ocean wave energy as the primary resource. This technology aims to address the growing problem of clean water scarcity, particularly in coastal and island areas that rely on seawater sources.
This seawater desalination process utilizes a machine designed to capture energy from ocean waves and convert it into mechanical energy, which is used to pump seawater into a filtration system. By utilizing renewable energy from ocean waves, this system not only reduces operational costs but also helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
In trials conducted on the south coast of Java, this desalination system successfully produced clean water with a salinity level that meets health standards, at less than 500 ppm. This process also reduces negative impacts on marine ecosystems, as the technology produces no waste that could pollute the environment.
The main advantage of this research is its ability to provide a long-term solution for coastal areas lacking clean water supplies. The research team hopes this technology will be adopted by local governments and water companies to expand clean water access to communities in remote areas.
Furthermore, this research is exploring the potential for further development of this technology on an industrial scale, such as for clean water supply in large cities near the sea. Researchers are also developing a more efficient and environmentally friendly treatment system and plan to conduct trials in other areas with the potential for strong ocean waves.
