This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of online and offline (face-to-face) learning at the elementary school level. The study was conducted by a team of researchers from Semarang State University in three different districts in Central Java, encompassing urban, semi-urban, and rural areas. The primary focus was to assess the impact of each method on students' understanding of the material and the development of their social skills.
A total of 600 students and 90 teachers from 30 elementary schools participated in the study. The instruments used included learning achievement tests, teacher and student perception questionnaires, and direct classroom observations. Preliminary results indicate that offline learning is superior in developing basic cognitive understanding, particularly in exact science subjects such as mathematics and science. Meanwhile, online learning demonstrated superiority in developing students' independence and digital literacy skills.
Limited access to the internet and digital devices is a major challenge in online learning, particularly in rural areas. Many students lack personal devices and must share them with other family members. Teachers also report experiencing difficulties adapting materials to online formats, particularly when creating videos or interactive teaching materials.
Research also reveals that students tend to feel isolated during online learning. The lack of in-person social interaction leads to decreased motivation and self-confidence. This contrasts with offline learning, which allows for discussion, group work, and emotional reinforcement from teachers. In the long term, healthy social interactions are a crucial factor in shaping a child's character.
Some schools have tried a hybrid learning model as a solution, combining limited in-person meetings and online assignments. This model is considered the most flexible and adaptable to both pandemic and post-pandemic situations. However, its implementation requires clear curriculum guidelines and ongoing teacher training.
The main recommendation from this study is the need for adaptive education policies that do not rely solely on a single method but integrate various approaches. The government is also advised to improve digital education infrastructure and support the development of local learning platforms that are more relevant to the needs of Indonesian students.
Further studies will focus on the psychological impact of this learning method and its influence on the development of students' character values. This research is expected to serve as an important reference in shaping the direction of future national education policy.
