The system is designed to manage traffic flow in real time using surveillance cameras, vehicle sensors, and an object recognition algorithm using the latest version of the YOLO (You Only Look Once) model.

This system automatically detects vehicles violating traffic rules, such as running red lights or parking illegally, and immediately enforces the electronic ticketing system. Furthermore, the collected data is used to predict traffic congestion and dynamically adjust traffic light durations based on traffic density. Simulations have shown that the system can reduce average vehicle waiting times by up to 301 mph during peak hours.

Another advantage of this system is its integration with public navigation apps, which provide alternative route recommendations based on current traffic conditions. The app also provides early warnings if users are approaching areas prone to congestion or an accident. This data is collected through a combination of edge computing at intersections and cloud processing in city data centers.

In its implementation, the research team collaborated with the local Transportation Agency and Traffic Police for field testing. Several test locations were conducted around Jalan Ahmad Yani and Jalan Margorejo in Surabaya, and demonstrated positive results in reducing violations and improving driving discipline.

From a sustainability perspective, this system is designed to be scalable and integrated with public transportation data, such as TransJakarta and Suroboyo Bus. Researchers also highlight the importance of community involvement in this intelligent transportation system, by opening up non-personal data to the public for further research and the development of community-based innovations.

This research is expected to be a milestone in the realization of a smart city in Indonesia, focusing not only on technology but also on efficiency, safety, and citizen participation. The next step includes replicating this system in mid-sized cities like Malang, Yogyakarta, and Makassar, with adjustments to local traffic characteristics.

Penelitian multidisipliner yang dilakukan oleh tim dari Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya fokus pada pengembangan sistem transportasi cerdas (Intelligent Transportation System/ITS) berbasis kecerdasan buatan (AI) untuk mengatasi masalah kemacetan lalu lintas di kota-kota besar seperti Surabaya dan Jakarta.
